As the Russian-Ukraine war continues, many Ukrainian citizens have been forced out of their homes and out of the country. Animal shelters, such as one in Borodyanka, Ukraine, have been abandoned by their staff, leaving dogs without food and water.
According to the UAnimals charity, the shelter in Borodyanka sheltered more than 485 dogs before the war. All these dogs remained locked in their cages since the war started late February until they were found by charity volunteers in the beginning of April.
In a tweet from Oleksandra Matviichuk, head of the Center for Civil Liberties, she shows a video of a pile of dead dogs who were killed by Russians.
Out of the 485 dogs, only 150 survived. The surviving dogs have now been fed and those who were in critical condition are being cared for.
Unfortunately, this is just one of the many shelters that were forced to go without supplies for weeks. Some Ukrainian volunteers who tried to feed abandoned dogs in a shelter outside Kyiv were killed by Russian soldiers.
