Kansas City, Kansas’ pit bull ban was repealed on Thursday, making American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers – along with any mixed-breed dogs sharing their characteristics – now free to live within city limits.
Commissioners with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, repealed a citywide pit bull ban that had prevented dog lovers within city limits from sharing their hearts and homes with the loving breed for nearly 30 years.
The pit bull ban ordinance originally went into effect in 1990, but when a dangerous dog ordinance passed in 2014, the law became redundant and unnecessarily targeted all pit bulls (and any dogs that shared the characteristics of pit bulls), regardless of any aggression.
On Thursday, Board of Commissioners voted 6-3 to repeal the pit bull ban, meaning the majority of dogs in city shelters are now adoptable within the city and dog lovers that share their homes with the breed are now welcome to reside within city limits with their dogs.
The repeal is effective immediately. KCK’s Animal Services estimates the repeal will save the department roughly $246,000 per year that was spent on breed-specific services.
Finally some sense…
