Pet food manufacturer, Freshpet Inc., voluntarily recalls a single lot of one of its products due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall announced on June 17, was handled in coordination with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The product in question, “Freshpet Select Fresh From The Kitchen Home Cooked Chicken Recipe (4.5 lb. bag)” has a sell-by date of 10/29/22 and a retail UPC number of 627975011673. The sell-by date and UPC code can be found on the bottom and back of each bag.
Some Target shops and other select merchants in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia, as well as the US territory of Puerto Rico, may have sold the recalled dog food.
Freshpet authorized a single batch for destruction, but the company claims that “a small portion of the lot was inadvertently shipped to retailers in limited geographic markets in the last two weeks.”
Salmonella is a bacteria that can develop in food and cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain if consumed. The illness can be potentially fatal in young children, the elderly, or individuals with weakened immune systems. It can also affect dogs and cats and usually results in symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
“Infected but otherwise healthy dogs can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your dog has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian,” the FDA announcement said.

They can also use the company’s website to find out if their purchased product is affected and to obtain possible reimbursement.
This recall does not affect any other Freshpet products or lot numbers.
