Description
The Standard Schnauzer, also called Mittelschnauzer, is a popular breed of medium-sized dog that originated in Germany. It belongs to the working breed family which is distinguished for their excellent guarding and rescuing skills. Standard Schnauzers have been bred to become guard dogs and vermin-hunting companions. Their wiry double coat is dense and hard outside and soft underneath. Their hair distinctly stands up at the back along with its coarser and longer bushy bears, whiskers, and eyebrows. Its colors usually include solid black, as well as salt and pepper.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Standard Schnauzer breed normally stand a height of 18 to 20 in at the withers, and weigh 30 to 45 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, commonly have a height of 17 to 19 in, and a weight of 30 to 40 lbs.
Temperament

Grooming
Although Standard Schnauzers tend to shed minimally; they are relatively high-maintenance when it comes to grooming department. Their beard needs daily cleaning, and their coat has to be brushed twice a week. The breed’s fur would also require stripping and clipping on a quarterly basis.
Health Concerns
Standard Schnauzers are a hardy breed. They have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. However, there are a few health complications known to plague the breed. These include dermatitis, heart disease, tumors, and hip dysplasia.
Best Environment
The breed is usually tolerant with apartment-living, but access to a safe yard space is ideal. Because of their athletic nature, Standard Schnauzers require a considerable space for movement. Daily physical exertions would be necessary to meet their exercise needs. Activities like long leashed walks and several vigorous plays are great for them.
