Bluetick Coonhound

Description

The Bluetick Coonhound, also called simply as Bluetick, is a breed of dog that originated in United States. It belongs to the hound breed family which is noteworthy for their excellent hunting skills magnified by the members’ exceptional scenting power, speed, and or stamina. Blueticks have been bred to become reliable hunting dogs and engaging companions. Their smooth, shiny coat is short, dense, and a bit coarse in texture. Coat color is basically dark blue with black or white mottling and tan marking.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Bluetick Coonhound breed normally stand a height of 20 to 27 in at the withers, and weigh about 45 to 80 lbs.

Temperament

Blueticks, in general, are highly intelligent dogs that tend to be very devoted toward its family owners. They are extremely attentive, alert, and capable of working over difficult terrains even during bad weather. They make excellent companions and fine guardians to the family and the home. The breed also relates well with older children, though can also do well around younger ones. To keep these dogs from becoming aloof with strangers, early socialization has to be done. Blueticks need firm yet gentle discipline, and would do best with a strong, self-assured, and consistent leader. Because of the breed’s passion for hunting, they are rarely trusted with small, non-canine animals. Handlers are advised not to let these pets off-leash in an unsafe, open area as they have the propensity to take off after a very interesting scent.

Grooming

Bluetick Coonhounds are not demanding when it comes to coat care. In fact, combing and shampooing on a weekly basis would already meet their grooming needs. Nonetheless, to keep them from acquiring infections, ear checks have to be done regularly. The breed is a continuous shedder.

Health Concerns

Despite the breed’s seemingly vigorous aura, they are still prone to a few health complications. These include hip dysplasia, cataract, and Krabbes disease. With proper care, nutrition, and exercise, Blueticks can live for as long as 11 to 12 years.

Best Environment

Members of the Bluetick Coonhound breed do best in an environment that gives them a lot of space to play as well as interactive opportunities to bond with human companions. Apartment living is not recommended for the breed as their loud baying could be a disturbance to the community. Because they are likely to wander off and prey upon other small pets, handlers are advised provide the breed a securely, fenced yard to explore.
