Description
The Redbone Coonhound is a breed of robust, powerful dog that originated in United States. It belongs to the hound breed family which is admired for their outstanding hunting skills magnified by their exceptional scenting power, speed, and or stamina.
Redbone Coonhounds have been bred to become reliable hunting dogs. Their smooth, glossy coat is short, and usually comes in solid red or red with a few white markings.
Height and Weight
Both the male and female members of the Redbone Coonhound breed normally stand a height of 21 to 27 in, and weigh about 50 to 70 lbs.
Temperament
Redbone Coonhounds, in general, are happy, even-tempered, and affectionate dogs. They love to be with people, and are excellent with children. Raising them indoors helps them to become very adaptable to family life.
The breed is an instinctive hunter that has a relentless desire to please his owner. Similar to other Coonhounds, Redbones are quick, alert, and capable of working in all kinds of weather conditions over difficult terrains.
Furthermore, they make outstanding water dogs, and are admired for having the same thrusting grit as terriers, and the pumping stamina of huskies.
Because of their strong hunting instincts, Redbones are rarely trusted with small, non-canine animals. So, early socialization and proper leadership is highly necessary to keep the breed stable-minded.
Grooming
Despite the breed’s distinctive odor, they have minimal coat care requirements. Bathing and brushing them occasionally would already suffice their grooming needs.
However, handlers have to expect to exert extra effort in maintaining the upkeep of the home for Redbones tend to drool a lot and smell bad.
Health Concerns
Redbone Coonhounds are generally healthy. As a matter of fact, they have an average lifespan of 12 to 14 years. Nevertheless, like any other canine, the breed is still plagued by a few health complications such as hip dysplasia.
Best Environment
Because of the breed’s hot nose, keeping their area securely fenced is important to keep the Redbones from digging their way out to follow an interesting scent.
Some are known to adjust well to apartment life so long as they get enough exercise. Taking them out for daily walks or jogs would be great for them.
