Description

The Beauceron, also known as the Beauce Shepherd or Red Stocking, is a breed of large, athletic dog that originated in France. It belongs to the herding breed family which is notable for their being excellent at controlling the movement of other animals.

Beaucerons have been bred to become reliable herding dogs and guard dogs. Their smooth double coat has feathering on the tail and hindquarter areas. The undercoat is soft and glossy, while the outer coat is a bit harsh.

Furthermore, coat colors usually include black and tan, and gray. Some members of the line have a harlequin coat coupled with gray or black and tan patches.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Beauceron breed normally stand a height of 24 to 27 ½ in at the withers, and weigh not more than 110 lbs.

Beaucerons, in general, are obedient, brave, and highly intelligent working dogs. They are willing and very eager to please their master.

The breed learns very quickly, responsive, and excel when it comes to obedience training. Beaucerons are patient, loyal, and faithful. And they are capable of police work as they are known to be fearful, vigilant, and able to readily sense danger. No wonder, they are reputed as natural guard dogs.

The breed also loves to work and exercise in large open spaces. They make exceptional herders as they can display their herding ability towards flocks of sheep in certain places. Besides, herding is a great way for the dogs to stimulate their working minds at the same time release energy.

Furthermore, adequate exercise and early socialization are highly necessary to keep Beaucerons calm and stable-minded. They get along well with other canines and animals.

Nonetheless, the breed requires consistent human leadership. Handlers have to be firm yet gentle in displaying authority over these dogs.

Grooming

Beaucerons are not demanding when it comes to coat care requirements. Their short, harsh coat should only be brushed on a regular basis to keep mats from forming. To preserve coat sheen, bathe the breed only when absolutely necessary.

Health Concerns

Some of the common health issues associated with the Beauceron pet include hip dysplasia and bloat. They have an average life expectancy of 10 to 13 years.

Best Environment

Beaucerons are likely to have difficulty in apartment-living. Their massive size and hyperactivity requires a lot of space and regular exercise. Lack of mental and physical stimulation can make the breed rather destructive.

The breed does best when given a job to do. Taking them out for long walks regularly is advisable. Allowing these active dogs to play and run off-leash is great. Furthermore, Beaucerons love to remain close to their master, and will become protective of the home and its dwellers.
