Description
The Norwegian Buhund, also called as the Norwegian Sheepdog, is a breed of medium-sized, spitz-type dog that originated in Norway. It belongs to the herding breed family which is remarkable for their exceptional ability in controlling the movement of other animals. Norwegian Buhunds have been bred to become reliable farm dogs. Their double coat is smooth and harsh outside, and soft and woolly underneath. Coat colors usually include wheaten, ranging from light to yellowish-red, black, and wolf-sable.
Height and Weight
The male members of the Norwegian Buhund breed normally stand a height of 17 to 18 ½ in at the withers, and weigh about 31 to 40 lbs. Bitches, on the other hand, are slightly smaller with a common height of 16 to 17 ½ in, and weight of 26 ½ to 35 ½ lbs.
Temperament
Norwegian Buhunds, in general, are active, vigilant, and untiring dogs. They are cheerful, attentive, and intelligent. The breed has also been identified to be very affectionate towards their family owners as they love to give kisses and snuggle. To keep these dogs stable-minded, adequate mental and physical stimulation as well as firm, consistent leadership have to be demonstrated. Norwegian Buhunds love to be taught, and tend to learn very fast. They are natural watchdogs that are brave and vocal, though not aggressive. The breed is unlikely to neither snap or bite unless provoked. These herding dogs are fond of children, and love to be with their family. No wonder, Norwegian Buhunds have been reputed as a great people lover. Additionally, they are highly active dogs that require a great deal of regular exercise. Obedience training is necessary to help them establish reliable and productive manners.
Grooming
Norwegian Buhund dogs are easy to groom, though their coat may require regular brushing. They are seasonal average shedders so handlers are expected to step up their combing efforts to avoid accumulation of unwarranted hair at home.
Health Concerns
The breed is generally healthy and hardy. They have an average life expectancy of 13 to 15 years. Nonetheless, like any other canine, Norwegian Buhunds are also susceptible to a few health issues such as hip dysplasia and eye problems.
Best Environment
Members of the Norwegian Buhund breed do best when given access to a large yard that provides them a lot of opportunity for regular basis. They rarely thrive in living in a kennel as they love to be with people when sleeping at night. The breed does not do well as apartment dogs as they have high levels of energy.
