Description

The Canaan Dog, also called Kelef K’naani, is a breed of medium-sized, square dog that originated in Israel. It belongs to the herding breed family which is notable for their outstanding ability to control the movement of other animals. Canaan Dogs have been bred to herd sheep. Their flat double coat is harsh and a bit rough underneath, and soft and straight outside. Coat colors commonly include solid black, brown, tan, red, sandy, white, liver, or a combination of liver and white, black and white, and brown and white.

Height and Weight

Both the male and female members of the Canaan Dog breed normally stand a height of 19 to 24 in at the withers, and weigh between 35 to 55 lbs.

Canaan Dogs, in general, are alert, active, and highly intelligent dogs. They are very docile, loyal, and devoted toward their family owners. The breed is also independent, and naturally protective; making them excellent guard and watchdogs. Canaan Dogs do not just excel as herders but in performing various tasks as well. They stand out on dog sports that involve dependability as well as obedience like agility and tracking trials. The breed tends to respond well to positive training, though can get easily bored with repetition. Canaan Dogs have a relentless instinct to protect their territory, and are likely to bark excessively. They have higher levels of dominancy as compared to other canines. The breed has the propensity to become dog aggressive so handlers have to be firm yet gentle enough in showing their authority over the dogs. Early socialization is important to accustom them well with people, sights, and sounds. It will also help Canaan Dogs keep avoid becoming aloof around strangers. Additionally, proper leadership and extensive training are necessary to keep the breed stable-minded.

Grooming

Canaan Dogs are very easy to groom. Their no-fuss coat only needs to be combed every few days. Bathe sessions may also be done when necessary. The breed is a seasonal shedder.

Health Concerns

Members of the Canaan Dog breed is a fairly healthy breed. They have an average life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Nevertheless, like any other canine, the breed is also susceptible to a few health issues. These include epilepsy, hypothyroidism, progressive retinal atrophy, hip or elbow dysplasia, cryptrchidism, luxating patella, and osteochondrosis dessicans.

Best Environment

Canaan Dogs are capable of thriving as apartment dogs provided that they get to receive adequate amount of exercise. Access to a yard is ideal. They can adapt to living outdoors, though they prefer sleeping with their family owners indoors. The breed is adaptable to either cold or hot weather conditions.
